Identity Theft

The term identity theft was coined in 1996 due to the lobbying efforts of the Federal Trade Commission. During this time period many consumers where devastated to discover their information had been used for loans, mortgages, lines of credit, and other transactions. It is a very easy processes to gain financial benefits, as most financial services only require that they do a credit check before extending credit.

There are several types of identity theft crimes. A few of them include check kiting, taking a saving account, and using someone's credit cards. The term identity theft covers a wide spectrum of transactions that you may not be aware of including money laundering, trafficking, and even terrorism. While it is not possible to steal a person's identity in the physical sense, it is possible to steal their personal information that is used to identify them. The owner of such information is exploited while the other party has the ability to get a free ride. Some criminals even steal another identity so they are able to secure employment and hide from law enforcement.

You don't want your identity connected with charges of illegal immigration, terrorism, or espionage. Other reasons why another person's identity may be used include obtaining medical treatment, medications, and renting vehicles.

The issue of identity theft is one you need to protect yourself against. Don't be naïve with your personal or financial information. Take a firm stand to protect your information from those who will take it in an instant if the opportunity is there.
